Mother’s house filled with thousands of glass fibers after she took mattress cover off to wash it
Single mother Brittany Rodriguez, from San Antonio in Texas, has been left with a $4,300 cleaning bill to remove the fibers, which have gotten lodged in her family’s eyes, ears and nostrils. Her mother Maria Astolfo bought the mattress at Walmart, with care instructions on the mattress label suggesting its cover could be machine-washed. Rodriguez said: ‘It’s on all of our comforters, the floor
‘The labeling should be like, warning, fiberglass, do not remove the cover.’ Unsurprisingly, Brittany and her kids have experienced itching, with a specialist cleaner handing the family a four-figure estimate for a clean-up. The drama has also destroyed many of the family’s possessions, which have been totally filled with the fibers. Rodriguez added: ‘I’m frustrated at this point, I’m exhausted I feel like warn down and I just don’t know what to do.’ After WSBT contacted Walmart, the retail giant agreed to refund the $309 cost of the mattress. They are also set to pay for the clean-up, and are waiting on an estimate for the cost. And Rodriguez believes she is owed no less from them, saying: ‘I think that the company should come in here and clean my house, dispose of their ill labeled mattress that had no warning on it that release fiberglass into my home.’ Walmart say they are currently researching what caused the mattress to burst, and whether or not the bedding product was faulty.
